My first post great! Here's a few summarised paragraphs on my choice to pick Lee.
So why did I choose Lee?
There are many reasons why I favoured lee over the rest of the tekken crew here's why:
Tekken 2- The music
This was my first game, I was 7 when my mum brought me my first PS1 console (had I chose the N64 over it I may never have been so drawn to tekken). So then when I loaded the game, my mum actually told me not to play it but to just watch it (Ok...I still never knew why but I obeyed nonetheless). So during the next hour I was watching random fights constantly, I enjoyed them, most were entertaining.
Then it was when the game moved onto Lee's stage that I was somehow drawn to both him and the music, I loved it! I could feel the rhythm, the techno elements behind that stage soundtrack. I also liked his vest, gloves and boots:)
Tekken 5- Mist step wall carry
Introducing myself to Combo videos
During the days of console Tekken 5, I didn't own a PS2, so my only option would be going to a friends house to play tekken. During that time I could remember watching combo videos a lot on youtube, I was drawn to watching them after viewing a Tekken 5 King combo video which mostly had a cool looking ISW ender, to me I was like "man...I wanna learn this stuff". I was new to the whole 'juggle system' at the time, I didn't even know the proper terminology then.
Silver Demon Lee Combo Video
There were a range of combo videos I enjoyed watching, it was Lee however that stood out to me the most. Why? I might not even fully know myself, I guess I could say it was the fluent movements in his 'mist step' to punches, and kicks. I discovered he could carry opponents to the wall for extra hits, and this really appealed to me a lot.
Trying the combos myself
After a year of watching combo videos, studying for school, and whatnots, I was dropped of at my friends house; staying there for a few hours before I would be picked up to go on holiday. There were other who were with me too, so there was hype as tekken was loading (they're scrubs btw, but not total scrubs who suck!)
VS Mode- I pick lee, another guy picks, raven. The round starts, I can remember doing a few moves lee had in tekken 2 (notable ones such as d+4,4,4,4 and the new 4,3,4). Then it was time for me to "juggle", I remember doing; U/f+4, 1,2~f, 1,2~f, 3,4. Their reaction was like "Woah!!! Aaron man..." that kind of surprise reactions made me grin with approval, I even suprised myself at the results because I practically guessed the combo. I really didn't know any other combos other than that because it just naturally came to me, I didn't know how to use moves like b+1:1~f or mist trap etc because I never had the opportunity to study Lee's moves.
I can remember doing simple combos with king too and hwoarang, but I wasn't too bothered with them, but after I left the house, I knew I had a character to learn, to study and carry over to Tekken 6.
Conclusion
Well I suppose there was a lot more to it but I guess it will just go on forever. Later during the DR/T6 BR years in September 2009, I joined tekkenzaibatsu, I learned the main terminology used, as well as express my views on characters and discuss the new console version of Tekken 6. This game I took very seriously, I was learning and found lee's new combos and techniques to be quite hard at first, but with practice I can say I've mastered his fundamentals. Personally, I want to be creative with lee, finding setups and new combos, I have yet to participate in offline tournaments, so home, youtube videos, TZ and T6 online are the only resource I have access to. I'm still working on punishment guide, I just hope I can finish it before TTT2 hits console (or arcades for the matter)
Now that TTT2 is approaching, what will Lee be like, I ask myself, who should I use as a partner, I've been thinking of Bruce, Anna, Heihachi, Ling, perhaps Wang. The problem is, I don't have the same strong passion for those characters as I do with lee. Perhaps I need to give myself more time to play with them more.
AZ!
